KAI Miyajima Overlooking the Seto Inland Sea — Hoshino Resorts’ First Entry into Hiroshima

Hoshino Resorts, operator of the KAI hot spring ryokan brand, will open a new ryokan, KAI Miyajima, in the Miyajimaguchi area of Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, in the summer of 2026.
This marks the company’s first expansion into Hiroshima. Located along the coastline with views of the iconic torii gate of the World Heritage Site Itsukushima Shrine, the property features ocean-facing rooms, all offering panoramic views of the Seto Inland Sea. Blending tradition with contemporary sensibilities, the design is expected to open a new chapter in Japanese ryokan culture.

Three Key Highlights

1. All Ocean-View Rooms & the “Sea Mist Room” Design

All guest rooms at KAI Miyajima feature ocean views overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. From the long sofa placed by the window, guests can enjoy serene seascapes with gently floating islands.

The rooms are named “Umi-giri-no-Ma (Sea Mist Room)” and are inspired by the sea mist characteristic of the Seto Inland Sea. Interiors incorporate regional traditional crafts such as Aji glass, Fukuyama denim, and Otake washi paper. The harmonious integration of scenery and space ensures that the stay itself becomes a special experience.

2. Bathing Experience with Sea and Mountain Views on the Top Floor

The large public bath is located on the top floor, featuring an open-air bath facing the sea to the south and an indoor bath overlooking the mountain range to the north.

The open-air bath is designed so that the sea and bath appear as one continuous space, creating a sense of immersion as if bathing in the ocean itself.
The indoor bath offers two temperature options—a hot bath and a lukewarm bath—allowing guests to choose according to preference and physical condition.

This luxurious bathing experience allows guests to relax while taking in the natural beauty of the Seto Inland Sea.

3. A Contemporary Reinterpretation of the Traditional Setouchi “Stone Bath”

The property will also feature a bathing facility that reinterprets the traditional “stone bath,” a practice long passed down in the Setouchi region, in a modern context.

Stone baths originated during the Kamakura period and are characterized by radiant heat emitted from stone floors, walls, and ceilings, warming the entire space. Compared to typical saunas, they are higher in temperature and lower in humidity, allowing guests to sit comfortably directly on the floor.

At KAI Miyajima, the stone bath is positioned at the closest point to the sea on the property, evoking the atmosphere of the shoreline. Integrating traditional culture into the ryokan experience is a defining feature of this project.

Surroundings

The property is located in a setting where guests can view the grand torii gate of the World Heritage–listed Itsukushima Shrine across the water, uniting seascapes, island scenery, hot springs, and historical culture into a single immersive environment.

Plans have also been reported for a pier within the property connecting to Miyajima, which would further expand access by sea and enhance the overall stay experience through cruising and marine activities.
