Regent Kyoto: Agreement in 2024, Opening in 2028
The legendary luxury brand Regent Hotels & Resorts (IHG) will write a new chapter on the historic grounds of the long-established ryōtei “Okazaki Tsuruga” in Kyoto’s Okazaki district. In 2024, IHG ANA Hotels Group Japan and GI Capital Management signed an agreement for Regent Kyoto. Following the ground-blessing ceremony on May 23, 2025, the hotel is slated to open in 2028, positioning the site as a new locus of “poise, heritage, and refined aesthetics.”
Highlights
Where Brand and History Converge
Founded in 1928, Okazaki Tsuruga has welcomed members of the Imperial Household and international dignitaries. The grounds feature a renowned garden by landscape designer Kumakichi Katō and architecture by Isoya Yoshida, a master of modern sukiya style. Regent Kyoto will honor this cultural legacy while carrying out selective dismantling and renewal to create a new, world-class place of welcome.
A Brand That Redefined Luxury & the Notion of “Quiet Luxury”
Since the 1970s, Regent has reshaped luxury hospitality—epitomized by Regent Hong Kong, whose guest rooms with expansive glazing over Victoria Harbour overturned the old equation of “luxury = heaviness.” Countless luminaries stayed there, weaving the brand’s legend.
At the heart of the brand lies Quiet Luxury—restraint, material truth, and profound comfort. At Regent Kyoto, this will be expressed through guest rooms averaging over 40 m² and a design ethos of the unity of garden and architecture (niwa-ya-ichinyo), enabling a serene stay within the city’s cultural core yet apart from its bustle.
Neighborhood
Set in Kyoto’s Okazaki area—nestled among cultural landmarks such as Nanzen-ji, Eikan-dō, and Heian Jingū—the site is a tranquil residential quarter where the Biwako Canal and four-season planting harmonize. Art, architecture, and nature converge to form a quietly beautiful urban landscape increasingly prized for contemplative stays.
